So...You want to be a Miner in Australia? How does one become a Miner?

(Firstly this generally applies to Australian PR, Citizen or Skilled Migrants. The majority of companies do NOT take a 417 work visa as this visa has a 6mth restriction on employees and thus makes costly training requirements difficult to justify)

This is the question I get asked everytime I socialise "can you get me a job?"

(SITE Based) In the mining sector there is generally 5-6 types of employee's;

Support Staff: Caterers/Domestics, Security, Site Admin
Safety Staff, Training Staff, associated admins
Operational Staff: Drivers, Vehicle Operators, Drillers, Drillers Offsiders, Process Operators
Construction Staff: Riggers, Scaffolders, Welders, TA's, Concreting
*Trade Papered Staff: Boilermakers, Fitters, HD Fitters
*Engineering Staff, Management, Human Resources

The latter 2 I will ignore, it is self explanatory and this information assumes that a trade has not be completed.

Generally for those who seek an entry level into the mining sector, the easiest and cheapest is to become either a domestic/caterer or drillers offsider. A drillers offsider however can only be considered a cheap entry point provided one works in Underground drilling. Surface drillers require a HR-B licence at a minimum.

The next least expensive option would be as Security; however site security generally require some security/crowd control experience, and although the course is cheap, the duration required can be considerable.

The other option is more expensive and is a Surface drillers offsider with a HR Licence. A HR Licence costs approximately 1500-2500 depending on the skill and familiarity of the driver and trainer.

Safety and Training type roles are generally limited to those with industry experience. Qualifying at TAFE does not give you any experience in which to pass on, or the ability to impart knowledge and skills to employees.

How do I write a CV for the Mining Sector?

A CV should be written with the job required/desired as the focus. It should target the job. If you have a Masters Degree and you wish to be a Drillers Offsider ask the question "if this information pertinent?". Similarly to if you hold unusual qualifications that are not required. Highlight the skills and attributes that you have, that apply directly to the job. Is it Labour Intensive? Do I need to lead teams? Do I need to be in an Isolated Camp?

Driving a Truck great distances does not reflect on the ability to do manual labour, so make sure you highligh both skills.

*As I get the time, this may be expanded upon and edited*
